I still don't know what draws poeple to MMORPGs. I played World of Warcraft for more than a year now and I still don't. Any accomplishment in such an environment is just bits in some company's database. But I do know what gets people to stay there: other poeple do. During the time I played WoW I met a lot of very nice poeple, came even close to calling some of them friends. This is not as strange as it sounds, even though - apart from the poeple I already knew before joining that guild - I never met any of those guys in real life. The guild I was in (UDT - Unerwarted DornenTod) was a fairly successful end-game raiding guild, which means we raided four days per week, plus the necessary gold and consumable farming. Remember - four raiding days made us a "casual" raiding guild. Other guilds raid six to even seven days a week. But despite all the time invested, despite all the whipes, all the drama, every success, every new boss killed brought a high and made it all worthwhile.
I eventually quit because with the first expansion on the horizons, and the unevitable mudflation of items it will bring I realized that I could'nt do this all over again, farming reputation and low-level items and leveling another ten levels. And I could'nt just enjoy this game as a "casual". I did enjoy standing around in Orgrimmar and beeing inspected, getting comments on my gear. And worst of all: not being able to brag about the newest raid boss downed.
So, Bullmon, this is your funeral site. You've been my avatar for more than a year, we conquered the World of Warcraft, we killed Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, we downed C'thun in Ahn'Quiraj, we made good progress into Naxxramas. You will not be missed, but you will be fondly remembered.
And to all the poeple I was allowed to play with these last months: Thank you for the countless hours you endured me, thank you for the wonderful time. You, indeed, will be missed dearly.
